"The Land of Our Own: Conversation with Dalit Members of Constituent Assembly" in English.

About the Book

The formation of the new Constitution of Nepal is a landmark of a new beginning for Nepal and its people. Alongside the new inclusive democracy of Nepal, it is vital for the Constituent Assembly (CA) members to make certain that there is an overall representation of the Nepali people, particularly that of the formally marginalized and excluded groups who were deprived of a voice in the political arena. Thus, it is of great importance to encourage a dialogue with the Dalit community, a historically unrepresented voice in the political arena.

The first of its kind, Dalits in the Constitution compiles interviews of the eighteen members from different political backgrounds in the Constituent Assembly from the Dalit community and engages in a broader dialogue about Dalit issues in the writing of the Constitution. The dialogue encompasses the vision of a new nation through the eyes of Dalits and addresses issues of anti-discrimination, secularism, universal right to land, education, health, employment and representation on every level and sector of society. As mainstream political leaders have delivered only empty promises in addressing Dalit discrimination, the participation of the Dalits themselves in politics allows for issues to be raised, confronted, and addressed by their own voice and on their own terms. The book will:
  • Give a detailed idea about the situation of Dalits, where they stand politically, and what their expectation are from the new Constitution and CA members.
  • Inform other non-Dalit CA members of the ideas and viewpoints of their fellow colleagues to facilitate an open dialogue in government functioning.
  • Encourage Dalit participation in governmental policy-making.
  • Consult CA members in formulating new policies or laws, and ways in which to effectively implement them.
